Sun safety

It's that time of year again - the weather is warming, half term is coming and summer is just around the corner - which means time for a reminder about the importance of protecting yourself and your children from the sun.

Key message:

It is important to wear sunscreen and use sun protection whatever the colour of your skin! This is not just to guard against potential sunburn but to reduce the overall lifetime risk of skin cancer.

Babies under 6m

  • Sunscreen is generally not recommended in this age group due to their sensitive skin so it is important to keep out of direct sunlight and do not stay outside for long periods of time.

  • Keep out of the sun as much as possible, especially in the heat of the day (11am - 3pm).

  • Use parasols or covers that have UV protection. However remember that even under a parasol or shade of a tree on a hot day there is a risk of sun damage.

Babies over 6m - older children

  • Use SPF50 sunscreen, use liberally and reapply every 2 hours

  • Cover your child's head with a hat

  • Keep out of the sun as much as possible, especially in the heat of the day (11am - 3pm). Use parasols or covers that have UV protection.

Don't forget:

  • To keep your child hydrated

  • Protect eyes with sunglasses

  • Wear a hat

  • Cover up with suitable clothing

Top tip:

Fill an ice cube tray with yoghurt, fruit smoothie or breastmilk if you are breastfeeding as a refreshing treat. Also great for teething!

Remember no sunscreen is 100% effective so taking precautions and ideally staying out of the sun is important. Black and brown people this includes you too!!!!
